Artist Statement
My work begins with a single image that arrives more or less complete. A form, a figure, a hybrid creature caught mid-transformation. The central form is the focus. The landscape comes later, and it is never incidental. It carries its own symbolic meaning. The empty skies, barren grounds and expansive emptiness in the fields, represent the mind, thought, the universe itself. And yet at times that same landscape is somewhere specific and real, the Dandenong Ranges, a cafe, a place I know. The emptiness is deliberate. It is both inner space and outer world at the same time.
My parents migrated from Argentina when I was a child. Growing up between two cultures, two languages, two senses of home shaped the way I see identity as something under constant pressure, never fully resolved, always becoming. That experience is the invisible architecture of the work I make.
I work within a personal symbolic language, dissolving and reforming heads, hybrid creatures caught between two natures, tendrils that bind or escape, and openings through form that let the world show through. These are more than decorative choices. The openings in particular carry a specific conviction that there is more than the solid shapes taking up room in our existence. That there is always more to see than we are currently seeing.
I work within the tradition of Neo-Surrealism, though my process differs from the automatism the Surrealists searched for. I don’t chase images through chance. I breathe them out. They have already formed inside me before they reach the canvas. What I am after is making visible the things that happen inside a mind: consciousness as the open, unresolved, possibility filled space I believe it to be.
A brief Explanation of Neo Surrealism
Where Dreams and Reality Converge
Welcome to the captivating world of Neo-Surrealism, a dynamic and evolving art movement that reimagines the legacy of Surrealism for the contemporary age. Rooted in the exploration of the subconscious, the irrational, and the dreamlike, Neo-Surrealism takes these timeless themes and infuses them with a modern, global perspective.
A Contemporary Renaissance
Neo-Surrealism is a living testament to the enduring power of Surrealism. Emerging in the latter part of the 20th century and thriving in the 21st, it celebrates the boundless creativity of artists who draw inspiration from both the classical and the digital realms.
Diverse Voices, Global Visions
Neo-Surrealism is a meeting place for artists from diverse backgrounds and cultures. It embraces influences from pop culture, technology, and the globalized world, resulting in a rich tapestry of artistic expressions that transcend borders.
Technological Marvels
With the advent of digital media, Neo-Surrealists harness cutting-edge technology to push the boundaries of their art. From digital manipulation to immersive multimedia installations, they create mind-bending experiences that challenge perceptions and spark contemplation.
Themes of Our Time
Neo-Surrealism addresses contemporary issues that resonate with our interconnected world. It delves into the impact of technology on the human psyche, explores environmental concerns, and questions the boundaries between reality and the virtual.
Exploration and Reflection
At its core, Neo-Surrealism invites you to journey into the depths of the subconscious, where imagination knows no bounds. It prompts reflection, invites curiosity, and sparks conversations about the complex tapestry of the human experience.
Explore the galleries, engage with the artists, and embark on a visual adventure that blurs the lines between dreams and reality. Neo-Surrealism is not just an art movement; it’s a celebration of the limitless possibilities of the human imagination in the 21st century.
